The 20th century opened an extraordinary range of new possibilities for classical music, and this program from Mount Vernon Music explores some of its most lyrical and compelling voices. At its center are Charles Martin Loeffler’s atmospheric Two Rhapsodies for oboe, viola, and piano, music of remarkable color and imagination, alongside works by Ruth Gipps, Ferruccio Busoni, and Nikolai Medtner.

Rather than following a single musical path, these four composers drew from Romanticism, folk traditions, earlier classical forms, and the rapidly changing musical world around them to create deeply individual styles. The result is a program that moves from the haunting sound world of Loeffler to the warmth and vitality of Gipps, the elegance of Busoni, and the sweeping Romanticism of Medtner’s Piano Quintet.

Mount Vernon Music brings together pianist Evan Mitchell, clarinetist Ivan Petruzziello, oboist Sharon Lacey, violinists Mark Miller and Andres Bravo, violist Ute Miller, and cellist Noémie Golubovic for an afternoon that reveals just how beautiful, varied, and expressive 20th-century chamber music can be.
